1. Sirius Black: I'd hate to meet him in RL, I'd hate his guts and be very clear about it. In fic, he's a great, versatile tool: clever, talented, faithful, fearless (not the same as 'brave'), biased, overconfident, cruel, opinionated, mindless, narrow-minded, immature, fails under high stress, handsome (in his youth or you can stretch it to some extent into his post-Azkaban life) or wasted (after Azkaban), from a noble family but a rebel, fugitive and outcast, drunkard, doesn't care for rules or law... Do I have to go on? You can make him a joker or a villain with an equal ease.
2. Scarlett O'Hara: a hard working girl. No, really, this is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about her. Yes, she was pretty, charming, frivolous, self-centred, shallow, mindless, ruthless, quite daft sometimes, not sophisticated or wise, but smart, down-to-earth, stubborn and brave, but above all she was a support and breadwinner for quite a few families (as it later turned out). I hated that moment when India walked on her and Ashley, when Scarlett finally,
finally started to understand him and gave him up as her lover.
3. Sherlock Holmes: brilliant mind, self-destructive when idle, the world inside his head was bigger than the real one. I loved that he combined different methods: deduction (of course!), chemistry, contacts among the demi-monde, knowledge about human nature, visits to the scene of crime, ambushes, provocations. I loved these moments when it was clear that he cared about Watson's well-being more than about his own :)
4. Old Shatterhand: oh, how I envied him the opportunity to learn such useful things as trailing animals and people, being able to tell how long ago the camp was abandoned and how far away the campers could go, to sneak imperceptibly to the enemy's camp, to steal away a prisoner bound to a stake in the middle of said camp, and then to escape without leaving tracks or waking anybody :) And to know Winnetou personally. You can hide with your celebrities, I have mine :) My bike was named after Winnetou's mare :) Oh, joys of early childhood!
5. Szarik: who wouldn't want a dog that was smart to the point of understanding human speech and was a part of a tank team, huh?
